Washer not spinning — weak or no spin repair
Clothes coming out soaked, with a weak spin or none at all. The cause can be trivial or it can be the motor — testing is what tells them apart.
A weak spin has more possible causes than almost any other fault, which is why it gets misdiagnosed so often. Sometimes the machine is perfectly healthy and the load is simply unbalanced, or the filter is blocked so it could not drain and therefore refused to spin.
And sometimes it really is mechanical: the motor brushes are worn through, the belt has snapped or stretched, or the coupling has crumbled. Telling the two apart matters, because the first costs almost nothing and the second needs a part.
What you'll notice
- Clothes still soaking at the end of the programme
- The drum turning slowly and never reaching spin speed
- The motor audible but the drum not turning
- The machine attempting to spin, stopping, and trying again
- A faint burning smell while running
- The drum turning by hand either too freely or too stiffly
Common causes
- An unbalanced load, or one heavy item on its own in the drum
- A drainage blockage — the machine refuses to spin with water in it
- Motor carbon brushes worn out
- A stretched or snapped drive belt
- A crumbled coupling on top-loaders
- A failed speed sensor or door switch
How we fix it
- 1Trying a spin with a properly distributed load, to rule out balance alone
- 2Checking the drain and filter — most "won't spin" jobs are drainage underneath
- 3Inspecting the belt and coupling by eye and by hand
- 4Metering the motor and checking the brushes
- 5Repairing or replacing the part, then a full spin at top speed to confirm
Questions about this repair
It means the motor works and the problem is specific to the spin stage. The usual causes are a blocked drain, an unbalanced load, or the speed sensor. The motor itself is rarely the culprit.
It depends on how hard the machine is worked. In daily family use they are a consumable, changed once or twice in the machine's life, and far cheaper than a motor.
