Washing machine bearing & drum replacement
A loud grinding on spin is not something to live with — the bearings are wearing through, and every extra wash pushes the damage into the drum itself.
The bearings are what let the drum spin smoothly at well over a thousand revolutions a minute. Over time, humidity and heavy loads wear through the seal that protects them, water gets in, and corrosion starts. What you hear is that jet-engine roar on the spin cycle.
It is one of the most commonly ignored faults, because the machine still washes. But running it in that state eventually damages the drum shaft, and at that point the cost multiplies. Far better to deal with it while it is still just a noise.

- Play in the drum when you rock it front to back

Common causes
- The water seal behind the drum failing and letting water reach the bearings
- Consistently loading past the rated capacity
- The machine not sitting level on the floor
- Simple age after years of daily use
How we fix it
- 1We turn the drum by hand and listen under load, to be sure it is the bearings and not the motor or belt
- 2We take the model number from the rating plate and order the matching bearing and seal set
- 3Full strip-down and separation of the drum from the tub
- 4New bearings and seal fitted, and the bearing housing cleaned back from corrosion
- 5Reassembly, a full spin cycle run in front of you, and the machine levelled
Questions about this repair
You can, but we would not advise it. Worn bearings gradually chew into the drum shaft, and once that happens the cost rises sharply because the whole drum assembly needs replacing.
With the part in hand, most jobs finish in a single visit. Some models take longer because of how the tub is assembled at the factory.
Bearing noise appears during the spin and rises with speed. Pump noise happens only while water is filling or draining, and sounds more like a buzz or whine.
